Yes. Sometimes the applications sit on the manager's desk for a while until they have time to go through them. And just because you applied, doesn't mean they were hiring unless you saw an ad.
The best thing to do is follow up about a week after you applied. Ask for the hiring manager and say, "Hi, I'm just following up on the application I put in last week. I wanted to see if you got it and if you have any questions." This will let them know that you were serious about the job and will put your app to the top of the pile.
If no response in another week, call back again. Tell them you're just following up on your application again. You're really interested in the position and wonder if you might be able to schedule an interview with them. Sometimes managers get busy with the day to day and a little push doesn't hurt.
But if you still get nothing after the second phone call, I'd drop it. Either your not a good match for the position they need or the manager isn't serious about doing any immediate hiring.

Wait for seven days from the time you submitted your application. If this application was in writing then send a very pleasant reminder letter to the person concerned saying something like:
I hope you have received my application sent to you on.....
If you need any further information I would be very pleased to supply this. Try not to be too disappointed, but just keep plodding away until you succeed.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
But put this in your own words.
Unfortunately it is now a fact of life that some firms to not even bother with this courtesy.
Just like the old saying 'Never take No for an answer!'
Best of luck. Jo.

I would definitely call them back to check on the status of your application. It lets them know that you are really interested. In the meantime keep filling out applications. Make sure that you are making the best impression at each interview. Many retail stores are adding on salespersons for the holidays so you should have a good chance of getting a job.

I would. I would also keep looking. When looking for a job, you should spend at least the same amount of hours as if you were working, looking for a job.
Try some of the job search engines also like Monster, Hotjobs, and Careerbuilder.
Good luck and stay in school!

Most definitly it shows that you have the ability to follow up. Don't make a pest of yourself but if you professionally call and ask for the progress of your application that should give you an advantage.
