The cost of changing the gears front and rear with carriers is expensive> Best go to larger tires>I have a 4x4 04.5= 373 gears went to 315x17 BF AT/Ko 10 mph difference slower >Yes speedo will change>RPM will stay the same only lower>I cruise at 68 mph 1650 RPM 20 MPG with a 100HP quadzilla mod>and other goodies>If a 2x4 than it might be worth the change>If a late model there are only 2 gears>373>410>Older 01up 353 > 410 gears>Might be less money going to the bone yard and buying a whole rear end 353 and see if they will exchange for yours?????Just a thought>

Generally speaking, the lower the rpm range in cruise, to a point, the better the gas milage. This would bring your cruise rpm MUCH nearer to your max torque range, which if memory serves is around 1600 rpm.
Take a look at this months Popular Mechanics and the pickup side by side test. The Chevy got great mileage, but had a MUCH numerically lower gear ratio than the Dodge or Ford. This again also puts you in closer to the max torque band for efficiency....TEST WAS RIGGED!!!! Wish they would test cars and trucks with the same spec's, but in your case, it shows the difference in fuel economy.
Good Luck
PS The above post on the tone ring is correct, but there is another output shaft sensor and the two sensors must match to get the correct ABS and speedometer reading. If a problem, you could get a trouble code, but Accell makes an adjustable tuner just for the Dodges..have Durango..Been there!

you will have to change the gears in the front and the rear. look to spend $2000 by the time you are done. you may not see a large increase, because you have to accelerate harder from a stop and it counteracts. i've been through this with customers that have done this. also, your speedometer does not have to be recalibrated. the sensor gets its reading from a tone wheel on the rear differential carrier, and no matter what ratio you have, the carrier spins at the same speed as teh axles. different tires change the speedo because it changes the speed of the axle shafts in relation to the tone wheel diameter.

You don't need the 410 if you don't haul heavy loads, you will have to get speedo re-calibrated with 354 gear, as it will read too low otherwise. the rpms will be lower also. The mpg may improve slightly.

its not going to help your mileage that much, because with the different gear you,ll have to accelerate little more,so i doubt you notice that much difference in it,and it wont throw the speedometer off because that is read by the gear on differential, but you wont notice much difference for the cost of it,by the time you buy the gears and have this done your going to be look at about 15-1800 bucks to get it all done, the bigger engine actually needs the gear ratio you have now,you may not like the different gear in it,you,ll also notice a lack of power in pulling things with it,good luck on it.,,PS here's a good site for a tuner for that truck, that might help you also.

The benefit of the increased MPG will more than likely offset the cost of the new gears, having them properly installed and recalibrating the speedometer.... Unless you do a LOT of driving.
