Since that would be impossible, I can say yes. He might have imbibed a little wine or ale, but I doubt SERIOUSLY that he used anything stronger.

I doubt seriously that he could have done anything he did if he had.

And I think it's wishful thinking on your part that you think he did. Which is, I think, really sad.
