For example, if we genetically altered people so that their limbs grow back when amputated, or so that they are smarter or they have less chance of catching diseases or increased strength, would that be immoral?

It sounds like a "positive" action to me. Why would anyone find this a negative thing? would they really want that person to suffer or live without?

You may find those overzealous Christians that like to interpret the Bible in a negative tone and sound intelligent. they will tell you, or doctors, that "they have no right to play God".

Being a doctor or chemist is not playing God, it isn't playing at all....it is working. These people work to make people well, functional and better than before, not to try to look more important at cocktail parties. Let us not be so quick to judge others who work toward improvement and a search for "positive" side to life. Doesn't the positive side seem to be more productive and preferred for the patient?

not a Christian but 1) great question and 2) I guess it depends how far+fast we run/slip down the slope. We invented machines that can pro-long life and now it is basically trapping people who are terminal and forcing their families to pay large medical bills while we extend the patients pain.

So I guess I would say it is a good thing as long as we are well aware and able to prevent our own best intentions from corrupting the process.......nothing causes more harm than something meant for good

No, altering human genetics is unethical, not because of any problem with the act in itself, but because the act is based on a moral philosophy that says different genetics can make one human being inherently better than another.

That sounds good. But at the same time I think it would be like saying that God screwed up and he should have thought about that

That's not genetics, that's eugenics. Yes eugenics is immoral because it leads to genocide.
