I generally encounter two general types of opponents in R&S.
One type is here to evangelize about atheism. Generally, their responses are dripping with contempt for what they think is a fairy tale. Since they have not studied the evidence (their biblical interpretations are invariably childish) and the don't make serious conterarguments to Christianity, I usually remove them from the real answers using the thumbs-down button.
The interesting answers come from Christians with evidence from the scriptures or the Church. Because they recognize that life with God is the great hidden treasure buried in the field, the pearl of great price for which all else is rubbish, their views are important.
Major errors in Christian thinking, such as the claim that religious art is idolatry, are clearly worth refuting.
One often-repeated fallacy is that we are saved by faith alone. I ran a search on faith alone in Bible Gateway:
http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/
The combination of and appears exactly once in the entire Bible, in James 2:24: "You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone."
NOT by faith alone. Faith-alone is clearly contrary to the scripture. Helping Christians refine their knowledge of Christianity is one of those good works that are important because "a person is justified by what he DOES."
Cheers,
Bruce

Heyya Rodney,
Peace, bro. First, off, most non-Christians here know about Jesus, the Bible, God, and the general overview of Christ's life.
I'm Christian, too, but many non-Christians here feel really brow-beaten over this. I'm not here to "save" anyone (God alone does that), but I'm here to learn what other people think. So, I show atheist, wiccan, pagan, heathen, Muslim, Christian, Jew, Hindu,..... everyone respect over their thoughts and beliefs, even if I don't agree -- as I do not expect everyone to agree with my ideas and beliefs.
I understand where you're coming from, dude.... I really do. But most people have at least heard the Gospel. Many have had it thrown at them.
The good news (pardon my pun) is that God IS here (yes, in R&S)... I've heard him. Ya just need to listen.
Peace, regards, respects, bro

I'm discouraged, but less by the atheists than by my brothers and sisters, the Christians.
How can we be a good witness when we fight amongst ourselves over the "real" meaning of this verse or that? What kind of witness is it when we say that a denomination other than ours is going to hell?
Based on what I've read from my brethren, I don't blame the atheists one bit. We look nasty, backbiting and hateful. Why would anyone want to pick up our Bible?
Let's pray that some of them can look past our faults and that the seed will be planted.

Rodney,
I am very much ENCOURAGED. There are a number of people on this site who genuinely care about others and may or may not be Christians. You need to see the big picture. If a person is interested in learning about HIM then you are certainly able to tell them what they want to know. Otherwise, they do not want to hear it and are not yet ready to do so. Have a great week.
Thanks,
Eds

It is discouraging, but we are to plant the seed, {word of God} and God will give the increase. Just pray that every word we speak of will not return void.

I'd suggest you let things be, otherwise you will come across as patronizing. As if you didn't hear of atheists and non-Christians before you came to Y!A. What kind of world do you live in then?

Are you sharing the love of god or the fear of him? I pity a religion that has to scare its sheep into following it.
