The standard rule is 3 hours before. Getting up at 5am to eat is not convenient, but to properly get ready for the race, you'd have to be up close to then anyways.
If you are used to eating closer to your runs than 3 hours, you can eat closer to race time. Do whatever you normally do on training days.
If you are eating 3 hours before, eat a normal breakfast, but stay away from fatty sausages etc. Pancakes, eggs, bread, cereal. (Some people are sensitive to milk before running, so take that into consideration.)Not too much, but not so little that you'll be hungry when the race starts.

I would eat a smallish bowl of oatmeal with an egg white cooked into it at about six to six-thirty a.m. I wouldn't recommend eating any wheat the morning of, but I always find oats break down very easily and provide long lasting fuel. But you want that protein burst from the egg white, too. If you hate oatmeat, I would recommend something like the guy above me--a bannana and peanut butter, or maybe an apple at about seven. I wouldn't drink oj myself, but I may be more sensitive to the acid level in it than other people are. I find it uncomfortable to just do a slow recovery run with juice in my stomach. Other then that I would try to be well-hydrated. I suspect that some people would find my oatmeal too heavy, but after two hours, the oatmeal will have had plenty of time to digest. I have more problem running hard when I feel nauseous from not eating enough. But I am definitely not a competitive runner--my best ever five k times are only a little under 20 minutes and right now I'd be pleasantly surprised to get close to 22 minutes.

If you are going to run at 8, you should probaly eat at least an hour and a half before the race. And dont eat anything heavy either. A powerbar always works for me. Also drink a lot of water with it or gatorade.

around 6 or 6:30 if you can't digest well. If you're in a race, you should be worried about throwing up if you eat too close to the race time

Lots of pancakes the night before. Maybe a banana & coffee NLT 7 am.

Good Luck

I don't eat anything at the one hour till race mark. If food has had a whole hour to digest it stays down and is broken down pretty good.

You want something with large amounts of quick burning energy in the morning. I'd say go with a glass of orange juice and a banana with peanut butter around 7am.
