With all their spitting on returning troops and being the terrible people they were, did it somewhat taint anti war efforts ever since? I am very interested in the Rights opinion of this question. Do ya'll hear anti war protests and automatically think they are those types of trash?

Mark L - There is a considerable difference between speaking an opinion and attacking those that are under orders. Call me what you will but... despite how much I disagree with Iraq I will never attack our troops.

Many of the hippies of the 60s and 70s were the Yuppies of the 80s and 90s and the Republican right today. When someone says hippie today I think of those who follow Renaissance Faires. The Rennies that I have met are so layed back they could care less about protesting.

My sorry generation not only gave liberalism a bad name they have completely morphed it from something beautiful to something completely ugly. Here are a few examples:

Free speech means you can interrupt or shoout down or throw pies at anyone who is speaking publicly if you do not share his views.

Art is anything that the supposed artist says it is.

Civil Rights for minorities means dependency on government programs.

Racism is something only white men can be guilty of.

Sexism is something only white men can be guilty of.

Wealth is no longer something to aspire to but something that should be taken away from the producers and re-distributed to the lazy.

Income is not something you earn but that the all powerful Federal Government allows you to have.

The environment is something that people have no business changing in any way. (People are some how not part of nature).

Pharmaceutical companies are not the providers of wonderful cures and treatments but evil profiteers that only want to hurt and kill as many people as possible.

Energy companies do not exist to provide fuel for your home heating and transportation but evil profiteers who only want to despoil the environment and poison the air.

Freedom of Religion means acceptance of Secular Humanism as the only true national religion and restricting the expression of all others to the inside of their respective churches.

Freedom of the Press means Conservative Talk Radio must be muzzled.

Private property rights mean you can own land and pay taxes on it but only the Federal Department of Environmental Protection can decide what you do with it.

Capitalism is the single greatest source of evil in the world.

Che and Fidel are swell!

Communism has only failed miserably every time it has been tried because they attempted it in the wrong countires. Bring it here and it will work wonderfully!

No. not at all. There are as many ex-hippies (like Limbaugh for instance) in the Republican party today. Not all Republicans are religious conservatives either. There are a lot of ex-hippie Libertarians in the Republican party. Not all Hippies agree. But, hippies definitely want individuals treated well, and not run over by government nor by corporations.

It's funny how people keep referring "the hippies" as if it was some kind of organized movement, gang, or political party. It related at the time to a fad in dress and hair cuts, similar to the kids today that wear their pants half way down their butts.
It would be interesting to know if 30 years from now political discussion centers around wondering if kids who wore their pants half way down their butts gave liberalism a bad name.
Simply because a bunch of protesters happened to be wearing bellbottom jeans, which were the fashion, and long hair, which was the fashion, it doesn't make them an organized political party.

Quite honestly,I see no difference at all.Same scene...an unpopular war, scandal ridden unpopular president, and the result?JIMMY CARTER.It turns out they weren't "enlightened"in the least.Simply rebelling against the country that gave them the right to rebel. It failed miserably then,I don't see why the results would be different today

The hippies of 1967 are still around.

The hippies of the 60's have matured and all got jobs.

They are invested in the country now and can do simple math.

They have a clear perspective and can see the difference between 58,000 deaths in Nam from 1959 to 1975 and this marginal gang fight in Iraq.

Instead of marching with candles and bongs in front of nuke plants, they are wondering why there are not more of them.

They are voting for Romney.

I believe that era (the 60's) was the beginning of a permissive society and the birth of "pop culture" and the social rebellion as we know it today. And yes, i blame radical liberalism. Prior to the sixties, society in general supported its country's wartime efforts--even though we did not like being at war--and treated the US military with respect. Something to be said for the good ole' days.
