if you book in advance at specific times you can cheap tickets,
Also if you under 25 and travel long distance at least twice a year you should get a young persons railcard
gives you a 1/3 discount and usually pays for itself on your first journey

www.thetrainline.co.uk shows all the different train co's fares. also i think megabus do some train journey tickets too now. and if you go on the Money Saving Expert website (just google it) there's loads of tips about how to get cheap travel, eg 'splitting' tickets - where you buy 2 tix for different parts of one journey.

You can get cheap tickets if you book in advance.
If your journey is a return journey, when you have accessed the list of train tmes, follow the link which says '2 singles may be cheaper', because the cheap advance fares are sold as single fares, not as returns.
Hope this helps

www.thetrainline.com sells tickets for the entire rail system.
If you know the name of the rail company serving your destination, you can use their websites too.
