The Revelation to St. John, Capter 5, verse 8:
"The twenty four elders before the Lamb ...holding golden bowls of incense which are the prayers of the saints?
But I suppose those prayers could be only prayers of adoration, rather than intercession-- but from the beginning the Church has welcomed people praying for each other, including the invocation of the prayers of the departed.
