is a point chritians peddle all the time.
do they even understand the book they base their life on?
Jesus said.....

1) “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be abided by until the end of human existence itself. None other then Jesus said so.

2) All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. "It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)
Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament.

I have often wondered, "If the Old Testament is a moot point, why even have it in the Bible in the first place?"

Christianity wasn't my cup of tea anyways, that is why I don't practice it.

The Old Testament contains the Old Covenant; The New Testament contains the New Covenant. Hebrews 8:7, "For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second." 8:13, "In that He ( God) says, " A new covenant," He has made the fist obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away." Jesus came to fullfill the Law and the Prophesies of the Old Testament. Jesus gave this parable referring to the Old and New Testaments: "Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins,or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." Matthew 9:17. Aloha!

+ Matthew 5:18-19: You left out Matthew 5:17 in which Jesus says:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill."

+ Luke 16:17: You left out Luke 16:16 in which Jesus specifically states,

"The law and the prophets lasted until John; but from then on the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone who enters does so with violence. It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest part of a letter of the law to become invalid."

It is a diffult thing for the law to pass away, but God can do anything.

+ The Law Fulfilled +

Matthew 19:17-78 states:

Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?"

He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."

For Christians, Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses.

Christians are not held to the ceremonial parts of the Mosaic Law concerning of dietary purity and temple worship.

Christians are held to the moral law of God, some of which is expressed in the Ten Commandments.

However Jesus took the Ten Commandments to the next step summarizing them into the two Great Commandments:
+ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
+ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

And teaching things like
+ Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
+ Everyone is our neighbor including our enemies.

Therefore we have to go much farther than the original recipients of the Ten Commandments ever dreamed.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, part 3, section 2: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2.htm

+ With love in Christ.

The old testament, or Torah to give the proper name, has not been superseded by the NT for Jews.

Jesus never renounced his faith: he was born a Jew, he lived as a practising Jew, and he died a Jew when the Romans crucified him; they crucified hundreds of Jews, sometimes up to 200 in a single day.

The Torah is not 'vicious'. All of the religious texts of all faiths have parts that if, taken out of context, probably do appear strange.

No, 2 Tim 3:16 says that the whole Bible is inspired and benegicial. Jesus and the apostles quoted many times from the Hebrew part of teh Bible and so many of it's laws and guidelines are restated in the Greek part.

the old testament shows Gods' personal interactions/dealing with a people(jews mainly)/person.and jesus fulfills the old testament,.. its prophecies and laws.the new testament shows Gods' personal dealing/interaction with the church(believers in jesus collectively)and shows the way to the father without all the legalistic requirements of the old testament.(thru jesus)the old was expecting a messiah(jesus)and the new a saviour is the consummation of the whole plan of salvation.jesus fulfilled the old testament -he died without a sin so if we have faith in him we r absolved from sin coz of faith and it is like we lived and fulfilled all the OT requirements.remember God abhors sin hence the wrath.

I wonder how many of you commentators have taken the time to actually read the first five books of the Old Testament with both a Jewish and a Christian commentary?

Yes , in the same way ...
the Quran supersedes the New testament and ...
the Book of Mormon supersedes the Quran and ...
the Gospel of the FSM supersedes the Book of Mormon

Each book is more absurd than its predecessor.
