I am trying to start a business. I tried to leave some information about my business at the office where I see my psychiatrist. He told me not to leave any information because it is a office of "sick" people. I know for a fact there are many individuals who are Bipolar who hold down professional jobs. Can anyone respond to this?

This depends on the severity of the symptoms, med compliance, support system, coping skills, etc. Yes, many individuals with Bipolar Disorder hold down professional jobs. Many others are unable to do so. This is also true of the "general population," so don't forget that.

Well I am not quite there yet but I hope to be within the next year or 18 months. I have had Bipolar for 23 years and never held down a steady job, but was not ready to admit it until this year so I didn't get the help I needed. So that was down to me, My therapist does not see any reason within the next 2 years if I stick to my meds and follow the programme I cant hold down a job. So you go for it, its nice to see a success story.

I began treatment for bipolar disorder mid-2003 and a year later I got a part time job where I worked 30-38 hours a week for two years and I've been working full time at my current job for over a year now. As long as I stay on my meds and change things accordingly when I start to go downhill I'm fully functional. And if it's relevant, I'm only in my twenties.

I was diagnosed with add/adhd last summer after failing my math course twice. Fortunately, the Massage Therapy department doesn't care about my math scores. I will eventually need to deal with math when I graduate and run my own business. The doctor who conducted my I.Q. test offered to prescribe medication for a math defect! I had to decline because I am 35 years old and I am so scared to be dependent on a pill that will not make me better at math, only more needy. So, I am not bipolar but just another American living under a label.
