I am it a total loss myself! His position is utterly pointless as he apparently sets himself up as some sort of Representative of God. No such thing in the Bible! Today, we have both a high priest, Jesus Christ, and His Representative here on earth, the Holy Spirit.

The Pope is a focal point, directing where Catholicism is heading, and if they are on the right path. Has a supposed special relationship with God that guides them. The position is also political - it's all power plays in who gets elected. Catholicism, unlike purely Christian churches, constantly studies the scriptures and their interpretation in regards to situations that did not exist when the Bible originated eg oh I don't know, lets say "is flying in an aeroplane against God's law ?" because you are defying God given gravity ? Answer : No. Silly example, but you get the point. When the old pope dies, all the top bishops vote for the new one. Has to be some sort of majority.

The College of Cardinals elects someone (typically another Cardinal although technically they can elect anyone on earth) and the Pope selects a new name, usually the name of a Saint or an Apostle.
