Underarm hair (also called axillary hair or armpit hair) is the composition of hair in the underarm area. This hair, as most of the other body hair, normally starts to appear at puberty and growth is usually complete by the end of teen age. The release of pheromones from the axilla at this stage of human development suggests association of armpit hair with sexuality. The positive response to olfactory stimulus in mammals and the consequent intensification of the sex drive caused by release of pheromones offers useful clues as to the purpose and importance of axillary hair in humans.

It has been suggested that the hair itself acts with a natural "anti-friction" quality between the upper arm and the thorax.

So it acts as cushion and to avaoid anti-friction and also to give sexual attaction to the other partner. viz.a viz -

Why do you assume it is just for warmth? I guess that's one possibility.

I found two probable answers. One is to help you give off a smell to attract a mate, the other is to reduce friction between your arm and body...to keep skin from rubbing against bare skin, causing a sore which could get infected.

Or maybe there is no purpose to it, you just wish there was a purpose for every part of you. What is the purpose in having a pinky toe, or earlobes, or hair on the outside of your nose?

I don't know where I heard this from but I heard it was to keep the smell close to the body so you dont go stinking up the place. Or it might have been to carry the sweat away from that place so youre not wet all the time. Sweat would dry quicker spread over hair than on the skin right?
