Ask her in a non-threatening way and listen.

"Hey - you and I are friends ... and you said you're having some problems... What's going on?"

Open ended question.

If she says "I don't wanna talk about it." then drop it.

She'll tell you what she wants to tell you. But LISTEN. Pay attention. DO NOT LEAP IN WITH THE SOLUTION.

If she tells you and talks to you she does not want to hear:
"The answer is " because this is going to be about her FEELINGS.

She wants to hear:
Oh! That's terrible!
How could (s)he do a thing like that?
I really feel for you!

or some such.

Listen and pay attention. Schmooze with her FEELINGS and give her support.

If she really wants an problem/solution type of conversation she'll ask you for one.

This is a good time to define what is going on. If you are intending to be a supportive friend you touch her HAND (back of her hand), her SHOULDER, her BACK - mid back ...

If you want to be a little more intimate, you can try stroking her ELBOW and her SHOULDER and her NECK.

You should just do more listening than anything. That's what girls like. Just be there for her and let her tell you as much as she wants and just keep nodding your head like you understand, and keep eye contact. Maybe even a one handed rub on the back can help.

Ask her simply ''what's the matter?'' or something general and casual and simply listen to what she has to say. She wouldn't say to you she had problems if she wasn't prepared or if she didn't want to tell you.
