We probably inherited that name as you suggest. What good is archived by just changing the name. I do not like dharma in naming my religion, as dharma is bound by time and space.
I do not agree with the name Vedanta, as it is after the end of Vedas, which is Upanishads.
I will rather live by the name that we can come together. So Hinduism will do for now.
How will you change the name of Hindukush Mountains in Pakistan, which they named after killing the locals by Persians? (just a joke)

Sanatan means, from the time immemorial. Actually Dharma and religion are two seperate things. Dharma can not have name, Cults can have names. For the sake of Identification viz.a viz other religions it was coined by Iranians. No scriptures of any denomination has mention of worrd Hindu. As practiced to day, Hinduism has no founder, no religious texts or no date of beginning.
As said earlier There can not be any name to Dharma. It is the manifested Karma in given set of circumstances.
If at all any name is to be given to Hindu religion for convenience sake, Sanatan Dharma is most suited.

Sanathana Dharma is the correct name for the religion practised by the majority of people in India. (The other major religion is Islam.)
Hinduism is the name given incorrectly by Europeans explorers to the religion practiced by people living in Hindustan when they first arrived - which was what the Indian Subcontinent was initially called in Persian.

In pre-historic time, 'Sat yug' as we call here in India, there prevailed Sanatan Devi Devta Dharam. People were highly pious and having disciplined life style. The sanatan dharma was mainly to worship 5 elements of life namely agni(fire), jal(water), vayu(air), dharati(earth) and aakash(sky). People were like devi-devta(god &goddess) and so there was no need to have any physical god. The life style was in tune with the nature.
As the moral fell, the trend shifted from 5 elements to devi-devta starting from Laxmi & Narayana.
As the moral further fell, rituals (karma kand) increased in importance. This is the time the sinle cult had to be divided into upper castes and the lower ones.
Still further down, many new cults came into existance. If seen minutely, the differences are few but the ego of the cult leaders played a role & we have now several religions and cults in each.
Due to large differences in life style, the words like hinduism, sikhism, muhammadism, etc.. came into existance.
THE ABOVE IS A SHORT HISTORY OF RELIGIONS IN INDIA. It can be seen easily that by changing only the name, no useful purpose will be served. Entire attitude will have to be changed.

Hinduism is not a religion. It is a culture, custom, tradition, way of Hindus' lives in Hindustan (India). It is claimed and insisted as such by all the well known Hindu priests, scholars, intellectuals, philosophers, books, scripts, the Ruling Party BJP & Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, the Indian and International strongest Hindu organizations RSS & VHP, each and every Hindu, etc.

Hinduism is a very old culture, tradition, custom and way of lives of Hindus in Hindustan (India) for centuries. The Idols and idol worshipping cannot be separated from Hinduism. There are over 330 or 360 millions of Gods and Goddesses in India & millions of temples / shrines with their idols therein. Hundreds of millions of Hindus pray and worship these idols in those temples and shrines.

All, each and every Hindu fights for the IDOL of Lord Rama to be placed in the temple in Ayodhya, to be worshipped & prayed by Hindus. Some modern educated, westernized and over innocent Hindus claim that idol worship is not Hinduism. They are ashamed to face others unnecessarily . They should be proud of their tradition, custom, belief / faith.

The word ‘Hindu’ was given by Persians to people living beyond Sindhu river. It was nowhere mentioned in any holy script. A Hindu is born to Hindu parents in Hindustan (India). No Hindu can be without a caste. Castes cannot be changed by any means; they are by birth. The Constitution of India and the Hindu Code (4 separate Acts) included everybody into Hinduism except Jews, Christians, Muslims & Parsis.

All the Indian Central and State Govts. laws, rules, orders, regulations and all judgements of the Supreme Court / High Courts always confirmed Hindus' castes are unchangeable and are by birth only. People unware of the Hinduism and influenced by western/other cultures/religions shout & cry that Hindus' castes are changeable; they conceal the true Hinduism, Indian laws, all the Courts' judgements, etc., yet cannot fool the others any more. The CASTE column always appears in all, each and every application form prescribed by Govt. institutions & offices.

Hinduism consists of four Varnas (categories) and thousands of castes therein with innumerable Gods & Goddesses for each such caste. Hindus castes are not equal. Hindus' worship & prayer is the job of their caste, they are born in by nature. Those not included in any of the said four Varnas (categories) are untouchables ie worst and dirtiest than dirtiest animals. These Varnas (4 categories) are taught in Holy Bhagavad Geeta, Verses 40-47, Chapter-18, and are not manmade to be eradicated or ignored.
