why do people get red eyes in photos?

Antoni is correct. Since you probably have a point and shoot camera and aren't about to buy a DSLR, flash, bracket and TTL cord here's what you can do in the mean time. Turn on as many indoor lights as possible, this will make the pupils smaller and less chance of red eye. Shoot from an angle slightly above the person so that their eyes will not be directly on level with the flash. Learn to use a red eye eliminating program on the computer.

Antoni answered the why...the light from the flash illuminates the blood vessels in the retina.
If your using a compact P@S, read your camera's manual, as you may have a built-in red eye reduction feature. This feature fire's a preflash burst, just before you take the pic, to make the subjects pupil's constrict, reducing the appearance of red eye. Ask the subject not to look directly into the camera and or move camera position up/down, so the lens is not at the same level as your subjects eyes.
If your camera is compatible with an external flash unit, get one, and as others have answered, get the flash bracket. Lastly you can take it out in image editing prog. but it's always best to get it right in camera.

its the flash reflecting the blood in the eyes, it happens cause people want small cameras and the flashes are to close to the lens

i dont get red eye I use a flash bracket or off camera flash

the flash is to close to the lens.making the flash less direct cures it.Thats why professional portrait photographers have the brackets that hold the flash away from the camera.

Because they jealous people whom won them,smarty than them,etc,so that they had red eyes.
