Many cultures have a mid-winter holiday/observance that deals with light. Does Islam have such a holiday? If it does, what are its basic concepts, and what symbols would be associated with its observance.

Many thanks!

We Muslims have only two holidays:

Eid al Adha (The Feast of the Sacrifice) which takes place during the Hajj.

Eid al Fitr (The Feast of Breaking the Fast) which comes at the end of Ramadan, the month when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

The Islamic calendar is based on lunar rather than solar observation, so these holidays occur during different seasons in different years. The solar calendar is irrelevant.

Interesting question, though!

Muslims have no a mid winter holiday that deals with light.Muslims in line with Islam religion have certain holidays in a year e.g (1) on Dec 20,2007 as Iedl Adha holiday ( Zhul hijjah 11,1423 H)a social day for dividing meat for the poor,a goat for 1 person donation and cow or camel for 7 persons donation. The animal should be slaughtered in the name of Allah. Before slaughtering we pray together in morning at the mosque or on the field and hearing the sermon. (2)On Jan 10,2008 we will have a new year islamic holiday Muharram 1,1429 H (hijriyah) .We celebrate it by sermon too. (3)On March 20,2008 is the birthday of Prophet Muhammad pbuh (Rabbiul awal 12,1429 H)holiday. We celebrate it with sermon too.(4)On July 30 or Rajab 27,1429 H, we will have an ascension day of prophet Muhammad pbuh which is celebrated by sermon too.(5)On Oct 1-2,2008 or Syawal 1-2,1429 H we will have Iedl Fitri holiday which will be celebrated by praying together at the mosques or fields in the morning and hearing sermons too.We shake hand for asking forgiveness among family, relatives and friends..
On every islamic holiday,we should pray for thanking to God and we hear sermon for remembering the important warnings and good news given by God as stated in the Qur'an. as our life guide.

we have two holidays. Eid al-Fitr ( to celebrate the end of Ramadan, which is the month of fasting) and Eid al-Adha which is during the month of Hajj, which is the pilgrimage to Mecca. We don't have any holidays to celebrate people or nature or any other created thing.
