The word "ad" as many meanings in Latin but in this context it means "to".

Adverb comes from Latin adverbum formed by ad (to) + verbum (word)

Adjective comes from Latin adjectivum meaning "that is added to (the noun)" neuter form of the past participe of the verb adicere "to throw or place (a thing) near."
Others say it comes from ad (to)+ a form of the verb jacere
"to throw"
