This really depends on what you want to do/see/learn.
If you are from a warm climate and you visit the usa in the winter months, you may find areas in the north uncomfortable for you. You should also consider how you will travel once you are at your destination. The usa is not like Europe where you can reach every place by train. There is a lot of space between cities. Sometimes there are 100's of miles with only a few small towns.
Your age will matter a lot. If you are young and you like bright lights, excitement, then either New York, or Vegas, Chicago or Los Angeles.
If you enjoy nature, then I would recommend either the Appalachian Mountains or the Rocky Mountains.
Consider if you want to see something different than your homeland - or something similar. The usa is so large that you can get a wrong impression from any one place. You can find cold, dirty, busy crowded streets or hot dry lonely deserts.
One area that can give you a little bit of everything is near Washington D.C. You can see the monuments one day, (with a bus and a tour guide) the mountains another day and be on the Atlantic beach the third day. You can go North and maybe see some snow and ski near Gettysburg, or you can go to the south and visit Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens (an amusement park) or Jamestown. ( a replica of one of the first settlements) There is also an island off the Eastern shore of Maryland/Virginia which is a bird sanctuary and has wild ponies. In the West, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, The Grand Tetons, Lake Tahoe, are all natural beauties. On the mainland you can drive for 100's of miles and see a lot in a week. If you go to Hawaii, it is limiting and very expensive. do some research on google earth before making a decision. Have Fun!

For your reference, Hawaii is part of the United States!
As for where you should go, that's completely up to you and is determined by what you're looking forward to doing......
Good luck and happy travels!
