A 64-bit CPU running a 64-bit operating system (ie Windows XP 64-bit Edition Windows Vista 64-bit Edition, etc) running 64-bit applications can be faster than it's 32-bit counterpart.

You can see a 5-25% speed increase.

A very important *disadvantage* would be that some manufacturers are a bit late to roll out 64-bit drivers, so it is best to check whether the drivers for your current hardware and peripherals are supported before you upgrade to a 64-bit operating system.

A 64 bit software is faster compare to its equivalent in 32 bit. Wider bit pathway is better for processing. More can be processed at once.

Backward compatible surely it is, AMD claims it has no same performance problem that Intel had with Pentium Pro; I assume Intel is no sludge either and solved this issue with its 64 bit.

high end science, biotechnology (dna sequencing for example), weather prognosis - generally programs where very high and complex level of mathematical computation is required - they run custom 64-bit programs mostly on itanium processors which are 64-bit

they frequently are. Its in simple terms like while we ran 16bit (Win3.a million) on our unique 32bit computing device's. Its a math situation it particularly is will artwork. Now how somebody who might of wrote a bad string of their .dll is yet another situation. Wasnt domicile windows 3.a million sixteen bit? See what I mean- Now we run with comparable computing device components domicile windows XP, Server 2003 etc on now..
