its like citing dr. seuss. its just funny and hard to take seriously. If you are in a debate and someone starts citing the bible - you basically just won. It's a fallback for people who can't make logical, scientific arguments.

These are people who not only have not thought for themselves but seem to be incapable of thinking for themselves. It is sad.

On the other hand, maybe we should start citing Dr. Seuss; it'd be easier to remember.

It starts with Martin Luther. The bible is the sole authority and its interrupts itself.

For the Christian, the bible is the word of God as spoken through the prophet.

Christians should be teaching (making disciples of) all nations. Matt 28:19; Mark 13:10; Luke 24:47

The word debate can be found in Acts 9:29; 15:2; 18:28 where Paul debated.

Answer: How do Christians decide questions like should or should not Christians debate non Christians? Judge for yourself by reading the cited verses.

Even if you don't believe the Bible word-for-word, it is one of the basic cornerstones of Western Civilization. It's something everyone knows, or knows of, just on the level of literature. Some of the stories in it are known as shared folklore even by people who don't attach any particular religious significance to it.

Also the King James version, written around 1611, is from a time when the English language was just shaping up, you might say the beginning of 'modern' English. So many of our favorite metaphors, figures of speech, idiomatic expressions, etc., come from either the King James Version or from Shakespeare, who was writing just about that time.

The best things in the Bible are self-evident. You don't have to believe God said them, or inspired them. Just for instance, I like to point out (usually to Christians) that Paul says to 'test everything and hold fast to that which is good'. That makes sense whether it was in the Bible or not.

You're right! No one should lean on the Bible unless they know it's the absolute truth. Using the same logic, no one should conclude that something is false unless they've scrutinized it carefully. Most scholars who set out to disprove the Bible end up being some of the strongest defendants of it.
It takes tremendous courage to be completely open yourself to new possibilities.
You can only find the truth if you are really looking for it. Most people don't want the truth. Most of us need to hang on to our traditional beliefs for security. I encourage you to challenge anyone who does quote the Bible, to ask them how they know that the Bible is inerrant. Likewise, you should be ready to prove that it cannot be Truth.

When you're discussing religion with people who read the bible, then it makes sense to cite it to illustrate a point. You don't have to believe in it to refer to it.

That's you're opinion. I know the Bible is the Word of God, so to me it is serious. Also, since God made us, how can any one be logical and scientific without him?

I saw a bumper sticker or something somewhere one...it said something like: "The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit". They forgot to add, "unless you're quoting the bible".

We quote the Bible because it is the Truth to us, in the same way a lawyer quotes out of his book, or a scientist to his studies and journals... we are refrencing the basis for what we are saying.

Take care, God bless

It's something they consider sacred and meaningful. To them it's their religious truth, and they just want to share.
