This depends on your definition of "best". If you want a simple player that can play nearly every type of audio or video file, doesn't occupy much disc spcae, is reliable and doesn't crash then I would go for "VLC Media Player". It's free, works on both PCs and MACs and can be downloaded here:

VLC is a good player...but if you want an audio player that also allows you to manage your PC's files, to group them and to rate them then you should probably stick to Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player 11 is the best in my experience, having said that it can go wrong from time to time and the cure for that is to uninstall it restart and re install it back perfect, you will never loose your own files they all come back as they were.

I've tried several and Media Player is the best. You can turn off the skins options. (Skins are the colorful things.) -MM

Windows Media Player is the best in my opinion due to it's replay, rip, burn and sync features and ease of use..
