Coma White --Hmm first of all public education is NOT 'free' we pay for it with our tax dollars and it is far from ideal, and you liberals stand against the people getting a voucher so they can take their child elsewhere. That fact stands for comminism.

What in the world makes you think that we Democrats buy the b.s. about being socialists or communists? Just because it's the latest smear catch phrase of the neocons and you all tell us we are? Please, nobody values the neocon opinion quite as much as they do.

We manage, somehow, to use socialistic programs to compliment our capitalistic system. UHC is not going to prompt building a statue of Karl Marx in D.C. anymore than Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid has. The hysteria on the right about socialism is beyond ridiculous. This country lives and breathes capitalism, and it's going to stay that way. A few governmental programs aren't going to change that. And just because a candidate believes in UHC doesn't make them a socialist. The majority of Americans are in favor of UHC, are they all socialists? Why do so many conservatives have to make a drama out of everything and exaggerate the dangers of everything that makes them the least bit nervous or that they don't fully understand - it's become very annoying.

well, just because you have a part of your society that is socialistic does not mean you are communist. I suppose you are referring to socialized health care. Actually, most European countries and Canada have socialized health care and they are ranked above us in health care. We come in at number 37 according to the WHO, number one is France, and they have socialized health care. And all those countries are democratic, they elect their officials and can go to any doctor they want. And if you don't want to go to a doctor that works for the government, then go to one that is private. Think of it like the education system. You can go to the free public school, or pay and go to private school. This fear of socialized medicine and that we will turn communism is all scare tactics that have been planted in us by conservatives. Really, it is not that bad. The only thing is that we are so far in debt now with this war, that I don't know if socialized medicine will work in the country now. But no matter what, you have to admit that our current system is broken and needs fixed.

I wonder that myself...but the answer lies in youthful optimism and naivety.

To a young person, who has had little experience with social institutions such as work , unions, volunteer groups and the like. And not having seen the results of it in the 50's and 60's before the fall of the Soviet Union.

It does sound good. I would be tempted to support it myself based on the arguments for it alone. But in practice, it is contrary to human nature and so is doomed to failure.

Look at the only 2 places Socialism exists here in the US.
Social Security and Medicaid/Medicare. Both are huge bureaucratic monsters costing many millions of dollars more than they can sustain. A huge drain on the economy and about as un-fair a system as one could imagine.

Now they want to force us to have a third huge social program...Nanny -care. It will break us for sure, if we let it happen.

All types work on paper but none work when the wrong person is in charged. Look at the USA right now. We have a president who says he is a conservative but spent more money than any other president. The Iraq war will cost every family of 4 $20,000 in taxes. He has raised taxes but goes on Tv claiming congress is raising taxes. He has then taken away our freedoms without a vote of the people. He has expanded the goverment and made it bigger. Just a example to you how a conservative goverment doesn't work when it is being ran by someone who isn't a true conservative. So does conservatism only works on paper?

Communism has an abysmal track record, bringing misery to everyone who is not a government bureaucrat. Socialism is failing in European countries, as more and more people are figuring it out that it's stupid to work for the government instead of working for yourself.

Gordon Gecko was right greed is good, and capitalism lets people keep the fruits of their labor, and makes for the most productive and rewarding society.

a social program does not equal socialism.

We don't support socialism (most of us)

We do support social programs.

those are our "projects" Besides, it's not like republicans don't have "projects" (Iraq for example).

But, you ask for examples that work.. when balanced with Capitalism it can work just fine. Just look at the Netherlands and the likes.

So relax... you're really overly stressed about nothing.

Nice answer above. Socialism hasn't worked hun... The point of liberalism / democrats and socialism is self preservation of their own power.
They get big government, they play nanny to everything you do, or own, or invest in, or eat. They infringe on your own personal freedoms,. All meanwhile saying they care and government will take care of you. We will steal your taxes and pay for socialist programs.
OH..but wait...if we mess things all up, well, we will try and fix it..just trust us, keep us in power, we are the one's with the power now to change everything.
its a vicious cycle and I have no intention of allowing libs to ruin my country. They can buy an island nation somewhere, and when they get in trouble because their system doesn't work, then can call up real America.
But lets ask the History books about socialism.
Did it work in Mousillini's reign in Itally ?...I recall him and his wife being strung up in the city square and killed.
I know Hitler was on top for a while in Germany........ I guess if libs like to have a really cool bunker to die in that's an ok system.
How about Communism.....last country left is China...oh..but we can overlook all the human rights violations. Wiping out of whole villages during the space race and their missles / rockets went astray, or how about Tienimen square, I guess it was just the peace protestors fault that the tanks rolled over them. Not to mention the shameful treatment in recent news over monks. Ya...socialism works sooo well.

Why do hatchling prefer Fascism to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?

The International Corporate Fascists are not interested in free enterprise. They aren't interested in competition. They are interested in domination and monopoly through economic terror and tyranny.

Why don't you just vote for Ron Paul then? Ummmm, a real conservative...... What is so annoying is that the main people playing this right vs left, who are brainwashed by Fox are voting for fake conservatives like Rudy.
