Through their ordination by Jesus Christ, the apostles were given (among other things) the authority to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead.

Why?

Simply put, it was to demonstrate God's power on Earth through the ordained apostles. God led the apostles to those who had recently passed on in order to prolong their lives for some purpose. From there, I can't tell you anymore about why those people had their mortal lives extended.

the concepts of 'heaven' and 'hell' were pagani concepts adopted INTO christianity. In the early hebrew texts, everyone whether 'good' or 'bad' all went to the same place Sheol.

One of the concepts of hell, himmon, was a small valley near Jerusalem where they burnt garbage, pagans, and prisoners. The FIRES burnt continually for centuries, but they are out now.

One should also note that 'rising from the dead' was not a really BIG thing back in the day. Alot of the 'undead' stories we got started from graverobbers. When they would loot the gravesites of people, they would dig em up, and find the insides of the coffins clawed and and blood and splinters all over the corpses hands.

In the 16th century, they even had coffins that had strings in em, so IF a person 'rose from the dead' they could signal someone on the surface to dig em up.

There were a number of herbs used in healing, that if used incorrectly could put a person into a deep sleep or coma, which would seem that they were dead, like in Romeo and Juliet by Shakespear.

The Christian concept of a 'good' christian going to heaven and 'bad' people or heathens going to hell when they died started in the late 9th century. Heehehehee so it wasn't a part of the 1st and 2nd century theology, when the bookd of Acts would have been written.

There are many different ideas about this. Basically, some theorize that when we die we fall into a sleep like state and wake up at judgement. 1 Thessalonians 4:16. It will feel as if you are going to heaven immediately after death, but in actuality we all go together. Just remember, God is not limited by time. 2 Peter 3:8.

Consider this passage from 1 Peter 3...

18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Therefore, believe on the Lord...that you AND your household may be saved!

The dead cannot praise God. They can't preach the word or tell others what Jesus did for them, but being raised from the dead gives them a great testimony of the power of Jesus Christ over death.

To show the world that Jesus had the power over the life. Even his disciples can raise dead people to show that in Jesus name even the death will tremble. One of my cousin died and came to life after much prayer. She was young and her husband and children needed her.
For certain reasons, Jesus does this miracle. We cannot question him. He is the giver and taker of life.

So that there may be someone to tell a person who doubts their story, because sometimes, that's all we have left to cling to when we ourselves meet the Grim Reaper.
