Contrary to what some folks have stated, the military is not the only ones out there, the Air Force may be operating the facility, but civilian contractors are the ones doing the testing, as well as the security.
EG&G is the main defense contractor there, probably the BOS (Base Operating Services) contractor. They have a private terminal at the Vegas airport for employees to fly the daily shuttle to Area 51.
Wackenhut subcontracts with EG&G to provide security.

ALL POSITIONS require a ts/sci ssbi, which is a top secret with a single scope background investigation.
JT3 in Nevada would be the company to apply to. The TS/SSBI is a roaring pain to go through and it can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years to complete. You can be sent to your job assignment without the T.S. clearance but your access to information and where you can go unescorted is very limited. Once the T.S. clearance is received, you can pretty much go wherever necessary to perform your job duties. JT3 is constantly looking for experienced electronic technicians and you don't have to wait for them to call you. Put your resume on one of those "job shopping" sites (like Monster) and also apply at jt3.com.
If you have anything in your past that you think might be questionable, be aware that the F.B.I. and other law enforcement agencies do a thorough background check, including family, neighbors and former employers. You are also given a polygraph test AND have a face-to-face with an F.B.I. special agent.
Advanced auronautical craft is the mission of the facility, from the Blackbird of the 60's, to the captured MIGs and Stealth craft of the 70s and 80s. Current activity involves unmanned craft....sorry no alien reverse engineering....(btw, they don't call it Area 51, that's a Hollywood designation).
One of my friends was working for security at the Tonopah base (some 200 miles north of Groom Lake) and he was telling me of their 'deadly force' orders.

I don't see what all the hype is about with area 51. It's a top secret base..... big deal. It's not the only one. There are some things the military is developing, testing, and using at these places that they don't need or want the wrong people discovering. And if that means having to use deadly force to keep those things under wraps then so be it. They don't just keep civilians out either. You have to have certain clearances to enter those bases even if you're in the military

"whats the need for the deadly force signs and the Camo Dudes in truck and Pave Low helicopters circling you if you go close?"
You said it yourself, "It's a top-secret military installation." That's the need for deadly force.

It actually has not been de-classified. Just because people know about it, doesn't actually mean that they admit it is there. Besides it isn't the only one out there. Just the biggest, maybe. As for the Security and Helicopters and shoot on sight signs. The instalation has been deemd vital to the national security of the united states of america. The same as many Nuclear missle silos and bases that store nuclear weapons. And this means that if you get anywhere near the place, they have a legal right to shoot you dead in order to protect the Security of the nation. So that is why, I mean seriously we need places like this. Every other place that makes military technology has probably already been infiltrated by Chinese spys. We need these places. Just try to stay out of there if you value your life.

It's a top secret military installation that whilst its existence may now be open knowledge (just like it was when the place didn't exist according to the US military) what goes on there is pretty heavily classified.
Whatever they're doing there they don't want you near and having a helicopter circle you after you've passed a "use of a deadly force authorised" sign is probably a pretty good way of keeping you out.

Area 51 has not been declassified. It is still an active military site. Civillians have no need or reason to be on the installation and lethal force can be applied to enforce security if needed, just as it can be on all military bases.

i dont know about "area 51" but there are other "areas" out there... they have signs too, did ya notice?/? there are testing sites, signs to tell you that! did ya read them? if we were suppose to know what was going on, they might let us in to find out! if you get in, theres a few things i want to know too.
Jarhead, you are exactly right! and you do not want to slow down and try to take pictures either! its not just a matter of entering, stay away! and all this time I thought he had a girlfriend in Vegas, damn.

Lemme see now. It is no secret that we have nuclear weapons. Does that mean that I should be allowed unaccompanied access should I choose to go pet one?
