Yosemite is beautiful any time of the year. Right now the fall foilage is gorgeous! Emerald Bay State Park at Lake Tahoe is another beautiful place to camp.

The central coast of California is great for camping (and for wine tasting - see http://www.cheers2wine.com/central-coast-wine-tasting.html). My family loves to camp next to the beach in Pismo and rent ATVs and ride the sand dunes. It's a blast.

There are too many places in CA to name. It's a humongous place. All the national parks are good places to camp. Around LA, maybe Big Bear, Joshua Tree, or Santa Monica Mountains.
