My adult cat is about 2 years old. I've been thinkin of getting her a friend. Should I get a Male kitten or female kitten?

female, there is some theory that two cats of the same sex get along better than two of the opposite sex.
I got a male kitten to go with my female (before I knew this of course) It took them many many months to start getting along, and now they like each other. My best friend and her male persian cat moved in for over a year and my male and hers would play and get along, my female NEVER liked him and hissed at him everytime she saw him. All the cats were fixed at a very early age so it had nothing to do with mating.
The opposite is true in dogs though... weird

This may just be me, but I've always seem to think that females bond better with males and visa versa, when they are not raised together. I've have several female cats and have tried to bring in another female, once they are adults and spoiled with their home. So, it always seemed as if the other cat was a intruder in their territory, but never really bonded. On the other hand, with a male cat I've introduced several females during his adult years and he was fine with it, just curious at first. Again, that maybe just that my male cat was .... well the coolest cat in the world... but I do feel that the opposite sex bonds better when they are not raised with one another as kittens.

We've introduced several cats over the years & it's *usually* easier to integrate a male into a home with 1 or more other cats. Of course, everyone has a unique personality & this is only a generalization.

My advice is to go to the animal shelter closest to you(preferably high kill-save one if you can) and see if youcan find one that is a good match. Laid back or outgoing or loving, just depending on what you think would fit your cats personallity the best. You are the only one that really knows the nature of your cat. If at all possible...try taking your cat with you to let her pick a friend. Alot of places have a room you can meet the new pet in...you could take your cat out and see if they get along! P.S. Animals also take to each other better on nutral ground, Just bringing a new pet home might be infringing on your cats ground and make her angry unless she knows the other cat first!

Not if they're fixed. I have two like that, and they were fixed at about 4 months. My mom's cats had over 100 kittens and it was my job to find homes for them. By the time I got my own place and my own cats, I was done getting rid of kitties!

I'd get a female, less dominance issues, as I am having with a male kitten and a older female.

Male, since it's an adult female you already have opposite sex might make the introduction go smoother, both hopefully fixed.

Either one will work as long as both are spayed/neutered. Do be aware that your adult cat may never be 'friends' with a new kitty no matter what gender.

I would get a female as a male may try to mate her when old enough.
