I am not 100% sure but while I was getting a package from the UPS man I returned to my living room to find my 18 month old crying as though he was hurt. He rushed to me and I inspected him and realized he smelled like vinegar. I checked the mud room to find a bottle of vinegar on the ground, but the bottle cap is nowhere. I am pretty sure it was plastic because all of the other ones are plastic. The bottle was about 16 oz. or so. My son weighs 22 pounds so I am not sure if it is possible for him to swallow it. I immediatley gave him some water to drink. Thoughts? He did not appear he was choking so I am not sure what could have caused it. My question to you is, 1, is it possible for him to have swallowed it? 2, if that is the case, what are the risks? His behavior is normal. This all happened earlier this morning.

Well...considering that he is only 18 months old....it doesn't sound like he swallowed the bottle cap....

but.....just to be on the safe side.....it's a good idea to go to the doctor and have them check.....just to make sure that he does not end up injured in the end...

My friend's niece swallowed a couple beads as well as shoved them up her nose........She was fine at first....but then a couple days later...she ended up in the hospital with respiratory problems

but then again..........I believe that your baby's fine......but just to be on the safe side.......a doctor's visit is good

I assume your child is not having any problem breathing, even for just a few seconds. Any croup like cough? Any wheezing? If not, perhaps you can just watch and wait. If he was able to swallow a bottle cap, he probably will pass it without problem.

Personally, I'd check out the mud room more thoroughly. A vinegar bottle cap is a pretty large item to swallow. I think he was crying because of the bad taste of the vinegar.

This is where the term " better safe than sorry" applies. You'd be suprised what children can swallow. Go to the ER and have him looked at it.
