Atheists believe that there is no God or gods. As such being atheist doesn't necessarily entail the view that we cease to exist at the point of death.

However, many atheists have this additional idea that we do cease to exist at death. They assume the person is a side-effect of the brain - when the brain stops working, so the person ceases to exist. This is an example of logical thinking, although not necessarily an example of sound logical thinking (personally I don't know if it is sound).

Since atheists do not posit the existence of a god they do not believe in the soul that Christians believe in - i.e. the soul that has a relationship with God and which is subject to reward and punishment by Him.

However it is possible to assert 1) there is no god
and still hold the view 2) the soul exists as the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, and is a distinct entity separate from the body.

In spite of Christian Propaganda, Atheists don't all 'believe' the same things. On the contrary, atheism is INDIVIDUALISTIC in their views, so you would actually have to talk with each one.

Originally, an atheist under the old greek philosphy merely meant a person that didn't have a set doctine of beliefs or religion, so even agnostics would have been included within the definition.

Its really only been about a hundred years in which some like to define atheists as all being the same thing, basically just meaning that they don't have a god or a belief in a god.

I have had some medical problems, so technically I have DIED three times, and each experience was different. Once I had the 'white light' thing, the next was just 'darkness', and the third was an 'out of body experience' thing.

Religions like to CLAIM they can define the 'unanswerables' like what happens after we die. The TRUTH is no one really knows....hehehee people can CLAIM anything, but it don't mean its 'real'.

Death happens to each of us, hehehee with all the possibilities that CAN happen, its really the ONLY fore sure thing. As with LIFE I will take Death as it comes. Why try to make it into something, just deal with it as IT IS, not how I hope it to be.

Christians are the one's that should be leery of the afterlife thing, since pretty much every tenent of CHristianity is listed within their OWN bibles as ABOMINATIONS to their OWN god, and contradictions to the teachings of their 'Jesus'.

Hosea 13:2 Human Sacrifice---ABOMINATION
Jeremiah 32:35 Sacrificing upon High Places, like Mt. Calvary---Abomination
Leviticus 7:22/ Hos 8:13 Communion---ABOMINATION
Deuteronomy 13/ Matthew 23:15 Converting People—Abomination
Deut 4:15-16 Defining ‘Jesus’ as god--ABOMINATION

Mat 19:17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”

Mat 5:18-19 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

The last time I checked the EARTH was still here, so so is the LAW.

Mat 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you sinners!’

According to 'Jesus', he is not a 'get out of hell free card'.

Besides, Christians are SELF PROCLAIMED sinners. IF a person is willing to LIE and DEFY their OWN god, the TRUTH is nothing is really sacred to THEM. IF a sinner is willing to LIE and DEFY their OWN god, a mere human really can not expect them to tell them the TRUTH.

Hheheee a person has to be pretty twisted to CLAIM being into human sacrifice, ritual cannibalism, and sinning against your OWN god is 'righteous'.

Muslims, now there is a 'sad' lot. A person really has to be twisted to take MORAL guidence from a child molestor.
Look in the Hadith,. Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64 will tell you about Muhammad at 57 married a girl named Aisha when she was six and "consummating" the marriage when she was nine. Even then it was BAD.

Hadith, Sahih Bukhari 14229 Narrated 'Aisha 'I used to wash the traces of Janaba (semen) from the clothes of the Prophet (Muhammed) and he used to go for prayers while traces of water were still on it)”=== good job for a 6 year old...washing out *** stains...teaches you A LOT about life

Our brains are a wonderful thing. They give us the ability to contemplate and savor our world. One day they stop working, because the body fails or they are harmed. All that makes up who we really are comes to an end.

This is sad. Life is like that, the sad and the joyful mixed together. It is no less beautiful for this.

Think of the best day you have had in your life. On that day there was the certain knowledge that it would end. Night comes, the body fatigues, we must sleep. Did that knowledge ruin your day, or did it simply motivate you to squeeze all that you could from it? So it is that I see my life; sad and joyful beauty that must be live today, for soon I will die.

Nobody knows what happens after death other than the decomposition of the body.
Atheists are mature enough to deal with this concept without feeling the neccessity to invent fantasy worlds in which people live for ever.

You get buried. And you decompose.

If conditions are right, some corpses wil fossilise and be examined by scientists in the distant future.

And until someone shows me a soul, I have no reason to believe that one exists.

Tons will go on after I die. I just won't be able to join in because I'm dead. I am not so sure on the soul subject. Maybe, not in the sense of like a ghost or spirit, but energy maybe. I think you are just done, over.

Depends on the person and the "type" of atheism.

Practical Atheism states "The existence of gods is not denied, but may be designated unnecessary or useless; gods neither provide purpose to life, nor influence everyday life, according to this view."

I guess we'll have to wait and die to find out what happens.

Atheist is one who rejects theism.
If you believed humans had a soul that would be a theistic view.
And you would fall into the category of Agnostic.

Nothing before this life and nothing after it. There is no god and there is no soul. Why would you think you are capable of pissing me off? You're the one living in denial.

I don't believe in souls or that I go anywhere in a physical or spiritual sense. I believe that after I die, I have ceased to be.
