The Marine commander was General Holland M. "Howling Mad" Smith.

Lieutenant General Howland "Howling Mad" Smith, U.S. Marine Corps.
Camp Smith, the headquarters of Fleet Marine Forces, Pacific in Hawaii is named for him.
