Well today Indians are Muslim,Sikh,Christian,Bahai and Hindu.

But basically, there are a number of reasons why the scriptures are not understood today...

1.In our beliefs, this is the evil age of Kaliyuga,so naturally spirituality won't be of much importance, the scriptures were written by Sage Vyasa when the evil age of Kaliyuga began 5,000 years ago by,so that the culture could be preserved

2. After so many conquests and mass genocide of Hindus by Muslims and Europeans, the entire religion fell apart, scriptures were destroyed, priests (Brahminas) were slaughtered and there was forced conversion, division and the rigid caste system developed

3.As a result of invasion, there is religious corruption, since a lot of the scriptures were destroyed and many of the Brahminas killed, many sub divisions of the religion developed, instead of there being focus on the single god, there became more focus on god's many incarnations,as well as Demi Gods who control the Universe (Laxmi,Ganesh,Brahma,Shiva,Murugun etc). So many sub divisions developed, now we have Vaishnavism (which is the original form),Shivaism and others. As Hinduism became very corrupt and confusing, the need for Sikhism developed,a single religion which could be followed easily.

So as a result of this,we have a corrupt form of Hinduism today, one that is the result of invasion, genocide and colonization, the once great Hinduism is gone. The one that had the varna system where caste was used to perscribe duty, and caste wasn't determined at birth,Hinduism where the philosophy is great and things were easy to understand.

Now most people in the world see the following image of Hinduism:

Cow worshippers
Caste system
Polythiestic idol worshippers

There is a lost Hinduism far more complicated then that, one that wasn't even known as HINDUISM as Hinduism is a name given by the west, before all that,it was known as Bhakti Yoga or Sanatana Dharma.

But of course to answer the question, scriptures were there in both Sanskrit and Tamil, both which are classical languages, but of course, major cultural clashes and conquests even changed how languages developed. Now most Indians speak English as there over 25 different languages.

Think about it?Some aristocrat was born and labled "high cast".Would he really want to study scripture and find out what his religion is all about?Or would he want to enjoy a life where he is labled as "high cast" and do whatever he wants?

Thats another reason, its kinda hard to reform 800 million people, where 99% of them don't really have a good understanding of their own religion.

Though great personalities like AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prahbupada were able to not only fix Hinduism but spread it to the west, with more people like him, maybe there is hope.

Scriptures are the knowledge God sent to this earth.

They are all difficult be they Hindu or any others since we have no foundation in this field.

A true master like Nanak, Meera, Tukaram, Kabir or Jesus is required to interpret the message in the scriptures to us accurately.
