My best friends are cops and I work with them just about everyday and I owe them alot. There are those that certainly tarnish the badge and think their badge gives them the right to mistreat people with their "power". I can see both sides of what you are saying and I agree with you. There are good and bad in every profession. Good question! Luckily, I think the dash camera's have helped hold the cops accountable for their actions caught on tape and I'm also glad to see a lot more people turning in pictures on their cameras, cell phones, etc., with evidence. When you're caught on tape, you can't lie your way out of that! Thanks for bringing this topic to others attention.

1. I have met cops who came across as surly... but I come across as surly when I'm having a bad day, too.
2. I have had one experience where the police dept. lost the paperwork that I sent in on a ticket and they sent out a warrant for my arrest, and that was a big hassle getting that cleared up... but I still hold the top prize for being disorganized and losing things. Shiitake happens. It's forgivable.
3. All my other experiences with the cops have been positive, whether I was receiving a deserved ticket, or they were responding to a fender bender, or responding to my calling about a "weird noise" in my back yard (haven't called in one of those for several years).
I have to say that, yes, I do feel safer when there is a cop car around. I work late sometimes, and when I get home late at night, and there's a police car at someone's residence or if they're just pulled over doing paperwork, I just feel that much safer getting out of my car and going into my house.
I'm glad to see a large police presence in my city, too. I know that "bad people" happen at every job. But, though I am generally a pessimist about my own life, I have an optimistic view about others. In this case, I am still grateful for the police and DO feel safer when they are around.
On the OTHER hand, when there is a police car driving BEHIND me, I do check my speed limit, make sure both hands are on the wheel, and put on my shiniest halo!!

Everyone hates the cops when they get busted for something. Without law and order we would have no society. Look at supppse police bruatality videos. 2 things to remember , 1. These suspects getting beat up, its usually not their first run in with the law. 2. News media only show you a part of the video not the whole thing. When a guy is being taken down by several police its because they are being violent. Are their corrupt police, yes just like corrupt teachers, ministers, businesspeople, you name the profession you will see some shady people.

my father in law was the deputy sheriff for 4 years, I understand your concern, but not all cops are evil or out to abuse there powers. The best thing to do when being pulled over is to stop in a public area if possible also. police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. signal them by putting on your hazzards or something also now you can call #77 and let the dispatcher know why you are not pulling over, however this does not work in every state, but you could always dial 911. you can not judge all officers by the actions of some.

I always feel safe around the police. I have nothing to hide. I interact with the police frequently in my job as an ER nurse. They are polite, professional and well educated. Of course I may be a little biased as I am also a former police officer myself. The police do a very hard job that few want to do but all want done, excluding criminals of course. Please remember that the police are not there to protect you but to protect society. Police officers are just people doing a difficult job.

Do people have any idea how hard it is to be a cop and put up with all the garbage that comes out of peoples mouth. I can understand if some have a chip on their shoulder. Im sure there are a lot of bad ones out there but cut the good ones some slack people.

i disagree. do u ever wonder how the u.s. would look like if we didnt have security or police officers? just because u don't feel affected by them in a good way doesn't mean they don't do no good. people have certain rights and if they were extended then the society would be a worse place. i think u should take ure rights for granted and appreciate that living in the u.s. is way better than how other countrie swork around the world.

No, no, no, no, don't ask me not to do something that you are doing yourself, besides, if you are asking a question in this forum be prepare to take what it comes, don't ask a question expecting just convenient answers.
I will always feel safe when there's police around, because I have nothing to fear or hide.
People like you whom curse the police are the first ones to cry out for them to show at the littleist sign of problem.
People like you help criminals like O.J., Spector, King, walk away from their hideous crimes.
The police do their job, and imbeciles like you, police's haters, go on the jury polls and judge the police instead of the scumbags that commit the crimes, because of your aberrations against law-enforcers.
Lets wait until you get yourself into a bind, and you need police help, they would come to do their job, regardless of the lowlife opinion you have of them.
