I have seen this claimed over and over again and was curious as to whether it is a majority opinion.

If your answer is yes: How can there be a purpose of life in heaven? (assuming you can't die and go to super-heaven, and so on).

Being a religious person who doesn't believe in heaven (I'm pagan), I'd say that life does have a purpose, whatever the afterlife may be, and they aren't THAT connected.

For me, there's no purpose in life without God. What good is it to arrive at the inn if the innkeeper isn't there to greet and comfort you.

I do not know what heaven offers beyond the few brief descriptions in the bible. I'm much more interested in getting to know my God better.

The purpose of this life is to love G*D & our neighbour.
Even if there was no heaven, we should still help one another.
Our goal should be to leave this place better than we found it.

.....and assuming those who are religious believe in a heaven to begin with. Some religions and spiritual systems don't teach the existence of heaven. This makes your entire question irrelevant.

Purpose comes from God. It's like a commanding officer sending a soldier on a mission. It is our mission regardless of whether we come back safely or not.

Our mission is to seek our Creator, to allow Him to reveal Himself to us and to find our joy in Him. Since God is infinite, we will spend an eternity discovering Him.

If we don't believe in heave or hell, or the moral code established by religion, we still have a conscience and ethics and enough common sense to know we shouldn't steal, kill or lie. The purpose of life is to do exactly that... to live... we are here to enjoy what we have on hand and the opportunities presented to us without damaging ourselves and others.

My purpose of life is being in the presence of God when I die. If I focus on money, fame, power, etc. I will be miserable. None of it can follow me in the grave. The only thing that can follow me is my soul and where I choose to reside for eternity.

I would hope that people do not feel this way. Life is a precious, valuable, and transitory experience. It took fourteen billion years for humans to evolve to the point where civilization could take root and humans could understand their origins and place within the universe. Once life is over, it's over. And death is inevitable. It's important to value the moment, because you never know when it'll end...

The purpose of life is for each of us to find. To me, life IS the purpose. To learn, grow, love and enjoy as much as we can. For you, it may be different. But that's okay, because we only live our own lives!
