Estelle’s (who is thin) department is having a pre-Thanksgiving party this Friday. Each of her coworkers were asked to bring some type of dish (i.e. a chicken dish, Chinese, Italian, salad). Estelle, Lynette, Sara and Penny were discussing the party when Sara said to Estelle “Estelle you will bring the salad and we want Italian dressing, and Ranch.” That is when Lynette slapped Lynette’s backside and said more fat (she was looking at Estelle when she said that). Later on Estelle asked why Lynette slapped Lynette’s butt and Lynette replied “Because my butt is going to get big from eating all that stuff at the party.”

Then about ten minutes later Estelle asked two more times why Lynette slapped Lynette’s butt and Lynette replied: (1) because I am going to eat and get fat (2) because we are going to eat a lot of junk at the party and get fat”. Then Estelle said to Lynette “Do you think I am fat” and Lynette looked at Estelle in disbelief and said “the only place you are fat is in your head”.

As Estelle was leaving to go home Lynette said to Estelle I am talking about my butt getting bigger not yours.

Estelle told her friends the above conversation and they said to Estelle you are reading into the above. Lynette never even mentioned you.”

My question: Did Estelle read into the conversation above?

Yes, for she may have only heard the word "fat"

What Lynette said had nothing to do with Estelle. Lynette was just being humorous about the probability of gaining weight from all the good food at the party. Estelle is totally over sensitive about herself and doesn't appreciate a funny comment from Lynette.

I don't think Lynette meant a thing about Estelle being fat. She was referring to herself. Estelle must have a distorted image of herself, and believes that she is fat, even though she is not. A lot of the skinniest girls either think they are fat, or they are looking for confirmation that they aren't fat. Estelle needs to take a good, long look at herself in the mirror. If she still thinks she's fat, then she must be developing a complex about being overweight. This is possibly a danger sign that could lead to an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Some girls are truly obsessed with their weight, even if they are as thin as a straw. Estelle sounds like one of these girls.

Wow that was alot! If Estelle is thin then she shouldn't worry about what Lynette said. I don't exactly know what "read into" means but I don't think she meant any harm

Estelle is a freak - Lynette is obviously hung up on her own weight (not a great thing either) Estelle is so self absorbed she probably thinks every conversation is about her !!!

Estelle is looking for an issue where no issue exists - yes, she did "read into the conversation."

Lynette was only speaking about herself.

Both of these women have negative body issues they are dealing with.

may or may not have . the point is , it is not a suitable / appropriate work conversation . probably not even a good personal conversastion if you are freinds outside of work. especially not good between any kind of a supervisor and the team.

try to learn to consider that anything you say at work or away from work in a public , that you are a representative of your company and the remark can be qouted in the press or misinterpreted. you are a brand ambassador and have leadership, diplomacy, judgment, discretion and tact.

learn from the experience and the value the lesson brings you. try to bring the parties together. agree that no one intended offense .. or just let it go / drop and go forward.

all should be professionals on a job.

HUH???????

Estelle sounds paranoid to me. Unless there is some bad history among them, she is totally reading into it. Skinny AND paranoid! Shut up and eat some friggin' pie, Estelle! And quit creating drama in the workplace.

If I followed this correctly, Yes she did. especially if Estelle is thin.. She may even have some type of insecurity about her body and took it personally.Tell her to let it go. She was already told it was not about her.

Absolutely she did! Lynnette was talking about her own wide load ( I can say that because I do it, too. No offense, Lynnette! ) Estelle needs to breathe and go buy the salad dressing.
