So my aunt finally convinced me to make an appt with a psychiatrist. She said severe mood swings/attn deficiency (failing in school after being straight A student), etc, may need to be checked out. I made the appt...and after the initial phone interview he asked me if anyone ever told me I'm bipolar, which I said no. I haven't seen him yet, but I'm not sure if I should. Do you think it'll help me/should I go? If he gives me a wrong diagnosis for whatever reason the medicine wont hurt me right (bipolar meds? I know i have mood swings but I don't know how severe they have to be for meds.)

Yes, you should go to see the psychiatrist. To go from having straight A's in school to failing your classes is a serious symptom and needs to get checked out.
Severe mood swings can be caused by bipolar disorder but other problems can cause this also. This too, needs to be checked out by a psychiatrist.
I hope this doctor does not give you a wrong diagnosis. There are definite criteria for diagnosing all psychiatric problems and these criteria are all listed in a book called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
All psychologists and psychiatrists must use this manual to diagnose their patients. You can ask the doctor to show you the criteria in the manual that he used to diagnose you. You can always get a 2nd opinion on your diagnosis.
Will medications for bipolar disorder harm you if you don't have this problem? Everything you put in your body has the potential to give you potential side effects. This includes Twinkies, coffee, steak, and eggs; as well as any medication.
Doctors always try a person on the lowest possible starting dose so that if there are side effects, they will be at a minimum. Most side effects from medications go away after the doctor has taken you off of that medication.
If the doctor makes the wrong diagnosis of your problem and starts you on the wrong medication; the biggest problem is that the medication probably won't help you, so that you will have to switch to another one.
I hope that I have said something that has been helpful. My best wishes to you.

I find it very unprofessional that psychiatrist screen clients with an initial phone call. I would go, but if he says you are bipolar, I would definately get a second opinion. And when you get a second opinion, DO NOT tell him what the first doctor said. If fact, don't even mention that you went to the first one.

What do you mean go to the psych?
A lot of people are bipolar these days, it is nothing to worry about. Take medication if you feel comfortable taking it, but know that it will change you (for the better possibly). Do not be pressured into taking something you don't want to.

Well you can take meds and see how things go. Seeing a psych can be very helpfull. I to have Manic Depression, i have learned over the years to cope with it. not many people have the strenght to do so like i have. But its worth a shot either way.

Well they ask you all sorts of ?'s to diagnose one to be bi-polar. Jusy bc of a phone interview? That's nothing to worry about. Wait until u see him/her b4 u start getting yourself worked up.
Mood swings? Are u an adult? Have u had your horomones checked? Were u abused? (physically, mentally, emotionally)
