Recently, there's been a rise in rape/homicide/muggings/etc in my city (Philly,PA). I'm very petite for my age (18 y/o, 5'1", barely 100lbs) and I hold a black belt in tkd.

But I'd feel safer if I had an item with me that would help should anything happen. i.e. mace, taser, etc.

What's out there that's effective?

There are a lot of everyday items that can save your life. Your car keys, held in your fist, with the keys sticking out between your fingers is a good weapon. A lollipop, with the candy in your fist and the stick sticking out between your middle and ring finger is perfect for gouging out an assailants eye(s). A pointy ended comb, same thing, go for the eyes. Pepperspray is great but can be hard to use in a struggle, you dont want to spray yourself. An air horn is good, any coward who would attack a tiny female in the dark will run if theres a chance he will be spotted.

When I lived in the city I carried mace on my key chain and when I was alone I kept in my front pocket easy to reach. Though I saw a recent report on tv about tasers becoming more popular. However the best defense is being aware of your surroundings.

Unfortunatley if you are the victim of a sudden unexpected attack it isn't likely that you would be able to access a weapon for your defense.

FORTUNATLEY If you are skilled at martial arts you have already possess tools that are instantly available to insure your safety.
#1 Be Aware of your surroundings. Avoid locations where an attack feels likely.
#2 Walk with your head up. Don't take a victim's posture.
#3 If you are attacked RESIST the urge to stand and fight. Fight just enough to disengage from your attacker and RUN. Some experts recommend Screaming "FIRE" rather than help because the word fire is more likely to get people to their windows.

You should call up your local police station and see if it is legal in your state to get a taser, which is the most effective. You should absolutely carry pepper spray with you, as well as taking a self defense course. Keep the pepper spray easily accessible.

properly the small physique vehicles you stated could be plenty much less difficult to hold/cover, and all calibers stated could actual do the interest in a self protection concern. Plus you have a plenty greater magazine means with the vehicles (15-20 in keeping with make/high quality) as antagonistic on your 6 shot revolvers. to boot, a .40 Glock would have much less shrink back than a .40 4 magazine shooting finished plenty, which places you back heading in the right direction plenty speedier for a 2d shot. submit to in ideas in spite of the undeniable fact that, double-stack .45s which comprise those produced with the aid of Glock have an quite extensive grip, which could be uncomfortable in case you have small palms. yet once you're confident and gentle using your revolvers, then use a variety of. on the top of the day, all of it comes right down to non-public selection and you ought to use what ever works precise for you

In some cities tear-gas/mace is legal. Walgreens may sell it.

Do not travel with it, unless you know if you can legally carry in the city where you will visit or travel.

It s NOT legal to have teargas/mace in New York City. You will be fined and may go to jail.

Get yourself to a womens self defense class. They will teach you amazing things you can do to protect yourself with things you carry around (keys, hairspray, chain wallet etc...) I took the classes for around $15 dollars a month. All the better if you can get a female teacher!

My Female Co-workers were issued
Pepper Spray because we worked
late at night, only one had to use hers,
and she warns, watch how you spray it
the wind can blow it back in your face.
She did make it home safe, that night.
