I suggest you take whichever one you like the most or feel most interested in.
**Personally, if you are learning one of these languages just for recreation, I would say Japanese or Chinese. --maybe more on the Japanese side. It's a really fun language to learn and you never get tired of it. The kanji is actually quite fun when you get into it. ^^

I am Australian and did not know any french before moving to France, I picked it up bit by bit and yes it is hard to pronounce. I promise you though there will be a moment when you have a 'pronunciation breakthrough' hahah and fall in love with the language (well any language that you learn). I think french also because it is very similar to other European languages such as Italian and Spanish and if you are learning it recreation ally then one day you may want to learn another language. learning french would hence pave the way to learning two or three more quite easily.
Either way have fun and congrats for doing something different!!

Learning Japanese will let you understand some manga and anime, if you like that at all. Plus learning katakana is easy, practically all the words are from English!
French is a beautiful language, and it uses the same alphabet as English.
Chinese is definitely the hardest of the three, but worthwhile.
Choose whichever you like to imagine yourself speaking.

French. They're all 3 hard to learn, and they're all 3 hard to learn to pronounce. The french pronunciation gets a little easier with time though, and once you get the flow of it, it's pretty easy. French is spoken in more places than the other 2 languages, and it's just so beautiful.

If you learn Japanese kanji, you have, by default, learned to read traditional (but not simplified) Chinese.
Take Japanese.
