What does Mathew 17:21 say in your Bible?

"Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Matthew 17:21 KJV.
This is a very important procedure that Christians would have to address in certain situations. This spirit is only driven out of a person by fasting and praying. There is no other way for it to be done, so I think all would realize how important this would be.

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." Hosea 4:6

It never ceases to amaze me how someone as sincere as you can ask a great spiritual question and try to enlighten people to something good and get so much negativity back in return. That is a good point you make. Since there is now a debate over whether that verse was in the original text or not, we need to go to the Lord in prayer and ask Him about the matter. I have never had to deal with casting a demon out of someone but I often wondered as I read that scripture who was to fast and pray, the one with the demon, the one casting out the demon or both??

In the NIV translation, verse 21 is included as a footnote because it does not occur in many of the ancient documents. This indicates that the verse may have been added or may have been inadvertently omitted from a document from which the others were copied. In either case, Jesus already gave an answer to the disciples concerning why they were not able to cast out the demon. He said it was because of their little faith. Prayer and fasting increases our faith, so inclusion or exclusion does not destroy the rest of the account. Refusal to pray and fast, when called to do so, will produce no greater faith than that of the twelve and the results will be the same. Praying and fasting makes the issue of the verse not being included a relative non-issue.
Caution on the part of those who translated may be judged as you see fit, but meaning is not lost by their decision to include as a footnote.

The New Revised Standard Version puts it in a footnote. My Greek New Testament says it's not in the most ancient text. Apparently, it was added later. The NRSV: "But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting."

By the way, it also appears in the NIV and the RSV, also as footnotes. I would think it was important to know that some texts omit them, especially if my eternal life hinged on a book like the Bible.

Thank you. My Pastor said this a few weeks ago...there are some demons that will only leave with fasting and prayer. I was curious as to where the scripture was to back this up.

Problem is that the NIV does in fact have some verses either removed or in fact changed.

There are even verses that have exact opposite meanings.

Funny how the unchanging and 100% True word of god can be so different.
