I head one of the lower teeth removed last week, which I've recovered from, but the other lower tooth is breaking through, but there is room on the other side for it to come through (there wasn't on the other side). Is the dentist just trying to make his money??

actually it is better to get them removed. i had a similar instance. my two bottom ones were fully formed molars that were totally exposed and just looked like an extra set of back teeth. My uppers were little tiny mutant litte things that again, were fully exposed.
the reason i opted to get them removed after delaying for almost 10 years, was the development of a cavity in one of the bottom ones. YOu are at higher risk for cavities and gum disease if you have them. usually the teethe are so far back in your mouth, that you cannot clean them properly, which leads to the formation of cavities. I went from having my gums meausred in the back at a 5 (which is bad) to a 2 or 3 tops after surgery a year later. My dentist was much happier with me.
Get them out for prevention of gum disease and cavities.

I got an infection around the gum of one of my wisdom teeth once. The dentist treated the infection, and then scheduled me to have both of them removed. (I only got two on the same side.) I was incredulous, because they were fully erupted (and thus could not get impacted) and healthy, and virtually all of my other teeth had fillings.
So the dentist pointed out that the gums that far back in your mouth are not the same as the gums around your other teeth. They are softer and don't fit as well around your teeth. And so things get caught under the gums, and you get infections. Since my infection had already proved his point, I had them removed.
So that is why they remove perfectly healthy wisdom teeth.

It may be impacted and could damage the rest of your teeth and jaw bone if not extracted.

He is probably trying to spare you future dental problems. If you feel he's wrong, get a second opinion.

If they aren't bothering you or crowding your other teeth, then I don't see why they have to come out.
