On my B-day he gave me a necklace and said that it was a 2 carrat diamond. He went on to say "diamonds are a girls best friend" and "thats the good stuff." In order to see if he was lying, I went to a pawn shop and they said that it wasn't real? It's not the fact that it is faux, it is that he lied. We have been seeing each other for three years. He has always been a romantic guy, not a "cheapskate" He has no reason to lie. We were with my family at the dinner table, so this wasn't about him getting "lucky" that night. I am a bit insulted because this gives me the impression that he did this because he thinks I only care about money. I never ask him for anything. What gives? What should I do? Also is there a possibiity of duping by the person who sold the necklace or the pawn shop?

Go to a JEWELLER, not some guy in a pawn shop, how the hell would they know anyway? The pawn shop guy is probably just lying to you, because he thinks you will sell the necklace for less if you think it is a fake.

Seriously, go see a jeweller (a real jeweller, as in a manufacturing jeweller who makes jewellery, not some chick behind a jewellery store counter!) to tell you for sure.

If it IS a fake, there are many things that could have happened, maybe your boyfriend was fooled, maybe he was trying to impress you even though he did it wrong by lying to you.

Oh btw, if you buy a diamond it should come with a certificate from the diamond company, stating it's clarity, cut, carats etc, and verifying that it is not a blood diamond/war diamond. Ask to see it, he is a fool if he did not get a certified diamond.

Edit: Dimitar A has a great idea! Try to get it insured, that way you will find out the real value of it.

There are several possibilities
1. He may have flat out lied to you - not good.
2. He may have been duped that it is a real diamond but it is not. I dont know where he bought it from.
3. the pawn shop may have thought that you are trying to sell it and they may have told you that it is fake so they can get it out of you cheap.
Obviously 2 and 3 and not his fault.

Do the following: tell him that you love the gift and if it is 2 ct diamond then it must be expensive and you want to insure it so if it gets lost or stolen you can get it replaced.
Ask him if he know an apraiser or if you can use the receit for the value of the necklace.
Then the truth will come out. If he readily embraces the idea then it is probably 2 or 3, if not then it may be 1.

Good Luck.

Well there's a chance they're fake, but not very likely. Whoever made the necklace wouldn't have been likely to use an expensive metal, especially quite a pure one for cheap/fake stones. Look at how they're set, are they firmly secured with individual teeth to hold the stones down or are they just molded onto the metal/stuck down? Are the diamonds scratched or chipped (it is next to impossible to scratch/chip a diamond so if they are then chances are they're fake) If the pearls are supposed to be white, are they unusually discoloured (brownish/yellow or orange) veneers and plastics discolour far more easily than real pearls, unless the necklace is very old the pearls should be quite a bright cream-white colour. Also, do the pearls look/feel smooth & shiny? A real pearl will remain tactile long after a fake one has become worn and rough. Are the pearls identically sized? Real pearls tend to vary slightly in size and shape as finding an exact matching pair is difficult. Fake pearls tends to be very uniformal in both size and shape. If you're unsure then ask a jeweller for their opinion.

Well, tell him the next time he wants to lie about if it is real or not, get a smaller diamond. A two carat diamond would be a WHOLE lot of money to give a girlfriend. If he could really afford a two carat diamond, then you really should kill him for buying a fake one.

A pawn shop is not the best place to get something appraised. Take it to a trusted jeweler.

If you love him, then let it be. Be happy that he is thoughtful enough to even get you a gift. No man wants a materialistic girl. Maybe he lied out of embarassment, or maybe he was lied to when he bought it for you. you never know.

maybe the pawn shop lied, that would be in their best interest, to buy it low ans sell it high... take it to a real jeweler

Who cares? Do you like it?

Get over the real/faux thing & appreciate that your man wanted to give you something he thought you would like.

Much ado about nothing...
