Anger issues, illness. Mix those things with a typical toddler or a cranky baby and abuse usually follows. There is a medical condition that makes people have EXTREME anger issues and there is medication and therapy that can help.
I know someone that has this anger disorder (Can't remember what it is called). Although he was not physically abusive, he would have screaming fits until he was placed on medication. I used to work for him and any little thing would set him off. I am the only one that he never yelled at because I just did my job and showed him he didn't scare me.

Lack of emotional and social support can contribute. Most abusers are "isolated", not so much physically, but they are people who don't really have close friends.
Many people abuse because they are repeating what was done to them as children. Maybe no one intervened in a situation when they were a child and they are left with anger issues. Many believe that what they are doing is actually right since they have seen it done before.
