The meteorite that hit the Earth 65,000,000 years ago and caused world-wide climate change that was so severe that it killed off the dinosaurs.
This event was similar but not as drastic as the meteorite that struck the Earth 250,000,000 years ago and took down 90% of life on Earth.

Global cooling because of particulate matter in the air. The fairly recent thinking said that this was caused by a meteorite hitting Earth. The most recent (I'm talking days or weeks, here) thinking involves vulcanism on the Indian Subcontinent as a contributing factor, possibly the major one.

Personally, I think they may have Evolved themselves into a Ecological "corner" -where the NEXT big Environmental Disaster (volcanic explosion; comet hitting the Earth; sudden onslaught of a Ice Age, etc.) caught & wiped them out- because they'd become so Big & Specialized to their Environment & they couldn't "change" fast enough... :(

i heard this rumor about an asteroid and some kind of global catastrophe making life as they knew it most unlivable. but that's just what i heard.
