Even if you consider yourself not to be racist, do you notice interracial couples more than you notice couples whose skin color is closer to the same shade? Why do you think this is or isn't?
I'm not trying to be down on anybody, though I know there are outright racists on this site all the time. I'm just curious about what still strikes people as different or odd, even when they're trying to be open-minded...

Thank you everyone for your answers, I really enjoyed reading them! I thought this was interesting, so I broke it down:
10 of you said you are happy or proud when you see an IR couple, and admire their strength (24%)
5 of you said you think it's beautiful (12%)
23 of you said it's a non-issue or you don't notice race (55%)
And 4 of you said something indicating you think IR couples shouldn't be (9%)
(Out of 42 answers that expressed an opinion)
I just thought it was interesting. It means 91% of you have no problem with IR couples!
I am in an IR relationship, and I live in the Midwest. We get some looks sometimes, but honestly most people don't give us any trouble about it. I'm glad our society is moving forward in that regard :-)

i'm truly surprised at many of the solutions right here. I many times will discover them to be an surprisingly sturdy-looking couple, and in many cases nicely suited - even if on occasion no longer, only as in couples from the comparable race. Interracial couples in many cases make for terribly sturdy looking and clever toddlers. we would desire to combination slightly greater, no rely if culturally, racially, and so on.

It's only in Podunk, America where that would be noticed.
Those of us who live among the REAL people wouldn't pay any attention and don't notice it anyway. When you live in a highly diverse population, with every race and religion represented everywhere, seeing an interacial couple or child is no more remarkable than seeing a traffic signal or a police officer.
Only in the isolated areas of the U.S. would that be noticed.....among the people who all look alike, never been anywhere, never traveled, never read a book and pretty much keep to people that look and think like themselves.
It's sad, really. They are missing out on the whole world.

I notice them, just because it stands out where I live...to be honest most of the local people are white. I think "good for them", because they don't care. As long as their happy together, then I'm happy for them. It just seems different because it was considered a really bad thing for a long time, and I hope it becomes more acceptable to everyone, not just people who want others to be happy with whoever they love, not whose color they match. I think it's great for them.

Hey, it does catch my attention and it makes me smile to know that nowadays, there are still cultured and openminded people who are not shallow and see who people are on the inside. When I do see interracial couples or even just friends, it inspires me even, to get to know different people and cultures, because they're ALL important. My family actually encourages us to get out there and expand our minds by getting accoustomed to the MELTING POT; we don't notice skin color; we don't discriminate. But it is unfortunate for the people who don't care to notice the beauty and the esscence of all of our races.

Since I have an interracial couple in my immediate family - when I see them all I see is my beautiful sister, her darling and loving husband, and their beautiful children.
And that's pretty much how I view it whenever I see an interracial couple that's not in my family, too--whatever makes them happy and wherever they can find love is a good thing.

I am happy to see that people can look beyond the color of the skin to find happiness in each other. If everyone had an interacial relationship there would be no more prejudice.

First response why is my husband standing behind me in the mirror?
I think I notice a very tall person with a very short person much more quickly. Skin tone doesn't really catch my eye.
We do get double takes, dirty looks and comments. I am embarrassed for those who are so preoccupied with such things, and i pity them.

Honestly, I don't really notice. Most people don't believe that I really think that, but I do. "interracial" doesn't mean anything to me. I just see a couple.....I have friends who fit into said category, so even if I do recognize the difference, it doesn't bother me.

i honestly feel awkward because whenever I see such a thing, I always think about what they have to go through to make the relationship work (eg. outside pressure, criticism). but other than that, as long as they're happy, who cares?
