Almost any style of guitar can be used to play almost any style of music. Go to a music store, take someone that knows a lot about guitars with you, and "play" as many guitars as you can. Buy a USED guitar in good condition - with your budget you should be able to get a guitar that might have cost $2,500 new if you just look around.

If you're playing funk then you'll certainly want an electric, right?
Well, I've learned over the years that there's no way to tell anyone else what make/model of guitar they'd like. It's highly individual. I personally like Ovation electric-acoustics but many would rather play them with a sledge hammer--all a matter of your personal taste.
But I can tell you how I'd shop.
First, I'd make certain I had a really good amp that had enough power and presence to fill whatever halls I might be playing in the upcoming years. You will be no better than your amp and speaker, that's simple.
Then I'd make sure I had the effects I needed to do the tones I wanted to get.
Finally, the instrument itself. I'd go to a big shop like Sam Ash where they let you plug in and play their merchandise, and I'd keep trying models 'til I found one that felt really good. It either would need to be in my price range and already equipped with pick-ups and tuning machines that I thought were right--or it would have to be priced so I could afford to swap out those pickups and tuners and have what I wanted installed.
Once I found a few guitars I craved, I would shop around for a while looking for the best prices at:
--deep discounts at the Sam-Ash style music shops, or used-with-warranty instruments from them.
--ebay, for the models I wanted sold new with warranty (or rarely used, from a seller that seemed highly reputable)
--pawn shops (check instruments carefully for flaws!)
--online music shops like http://www.musiciansfriend.com or http://www.musicyo.com or http://www.themusiczoo.com or http://www.carvin.com
-- http://www.shopgoodwill.com (since it's thrift store quality, have enough cash in reserve to pay a few hundred for repair shop service--at least a set-up)

It depends if you want an acoustic or electric guitar.
I would go for a Takamine(acoustic) they go from $400 to over a $1,000.
