You must mean UPSCALE DVD not upscale hddvd. an upscale dvd player takes you regular DVDs and inproves the picture. I got one of these when i first got my HDTV it does a good job but it still nowhere near as good as Bluray or HDDVD. I have since bought a PS3 it plays Bluray and it looks amazing!!! but if i have a movie that is not a Bluray I could still watch it an my "Up Scale DVD player" the proper term is Upconverter DVD player as it trys to upcovert it to 1080i. Buy the way the PS3 also has this Upscale feature build in so you can view your regular DVDs on it and it will inprove the picture. The PS3 is on sale at Kmart for only $319 right now with a coupon just in time for Xmas

Up-scaling DVD players only take standard def DVDs, but will up convert if you hook them up to a HDTV with a HDMI cable.

You need either a PS3 or a BluRay player to play BluRay disks or a HD-DVD player for HD-DVD disks.

The Samsung BD-UP5000 or the LG BH110 are both dual-format player that will play either BluRay or HD-DVD disks. But they run about $800-$1300 and while it does work, it does not support some of the special features of the dedicated players.

I have put links to reviews of both players below.

To the guy above me. Please cite where the heck you're getting your info from. There is no player out there on the market that plays both HD and bluray DVDs. Are you aware that these two formats are currently in the middle of a high def war?

It depends on whether they are for Blu-ray of HD. 1 or 2 players currently on the market will play both.

Neither....they take OLD DVDS and line double the video information....

Then they output it to make your TV set THINK it's an HD signal....

And it's not....

It's still OLD 480 line information that's "Line doubled"
Same line just written twice.....

BIG WHOOP ......

I'd go with an HD-DVD...it PLAYS both HD discs and "line doubles" OLD DVDS.....
That way you don't have to throw away your OLD Library of your favorite DVDS.....
