Hi, I'm Tom. I know this is a weird question, but I'm asking it anyways. What I want to do is go on a pilgrimage to meet a wise-man/woman that can enlighten me to life. I know it sounds like some bad fantasy story; so if you are going to say something sarcastic, just leave. But if you have a real answer, please post. I have no problem selecting no best answer if I don't receive any good answers.

I want the wise-person to be able to teach me what life is about, why I'm here, and what I'm supposed to do. The journey does matter. I shouldn't be able to walk into a clinic and ask someone for the secret of life. It just doesn't seem right to me.

This is a toughy... Do you want to do a physical pilgrimage? If so, the only place I could think of is India (I guess I saw many shows about pilgrimage like that).

Another question though is: do you have a specific religion in mind? There are Christian places that have holy sites. It is not a person, but can maybe bring you some answers.

If you want to give books a try I would suggest the Ishmael series by Daniel Quinn, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and Illusion or the Reluctant Messiah by the same author. Those are books that really changed me.

Maybe contact the places of worship around your house and see if they could recommend someone either near or far that you could meet. But, like in all things, be careful, especially if you decide to travel. Best of luck on your path and in finding what you are looking for.

They often say that, when the student is ready the teacher will appear. You never know, this might be your time.

Exactly what kind of wise man or woman do you want to meet? Do you want to talk to someone who holds a particular religious perspective?
Is the journey itself something of significance to you as well, or would signing up for a weekend religious retreat somewhere give you what you're looking for?
If the journey itself is significant, do you want to do it on foot? Bike? Car? Your knees?
How "traditional" do you want it to be? Are you looking for a well-worn pilgrimage trail or would it suit you to make your own unique journey instead?

There are lots of decisions to make about something like this.
P.S. a friend of mine took a low-cost trip to Europe for several months, doing certain kinds of work/study jobs at very interesting places along the way. I can imagine planning a trip like this with a spiritual focus.

Edit:
Do you feel you need to go far away for that? Or could a trip to someplace nearby be a good first start? I'm sure there are people known for their wisdom wherever you live.

Your wish sounds fascinating. I'd love to hear more.

Will you be disappointed if that pilgrimage did not consume a lot of time and money? The person you wish to meet may be next door to where you live.
