I use Bed Head Manipulator first, then Nexxus Exxtra Gel. I have short hair too.

Dry your hair pretty well, with a towel. Then, the Bed Head Manipulator, you just stick the tip of your finger in there and get SOME on your finger, like maybe a little less than the amount of toothpaste you would put on your toothbrush.

Put the manipulator in the palm of one hand and rub your two hands together vigorously, so the wax covers the palms of your hands. You should not be able to see the actual color of the wax, if you can, you have used too much.

Run your hands through your hair a few times, so the wax gets all over your hair (both your outer hair and inside, on the roots of the hair).

Then, I use about the same amount of gel, so I get a bit of a wet and spikey look in spots, but not an excessive amount.
