I am being audited from 1997 to 2002. My former employer for those years has gone out of business. It has so far been very difficult to get a hold of him as he has moved out of the area. During my most recent move (2006), I somehow lost these tax forms. Where can I get copies of these forms? Please help.

Ask your auditor, if you are dealing directly with one, or the IRS for copies of your past W-2's.

Your employer had to issue W-2's to the IRS as well as to you.

The letter you received from the IRS provides you with a phone number to call, you should call them and ask them to send you the W2, the w2's will be sent to you for free. If you also need the actual return you filed for those years you can also request a copy for free(or at least use to), IRS provides FREE copies of returns only if you are audited. IF the letter doesn't have a phone number then call 1-800-829-1040 or visit you local IRS office in you city.

You can call IRS at 800-829-1040 and request they send or fax you an Information Returns Transcript for your missing years. The records only go back for six years.

If you are being audited, the originals returns and W2 forms should be in possession of the auditor.

First, you should retain your W2 and tax info for at least 7-10 years, if not forever.

Second, you can contact the IRS and get the numbers.
