Uncle Ansel supported himself first by commercial photography, but he loved the outdoors and began making landscapes of Yosemite for the love of it. Adams took his work to Edward Steichen at his gallery in New York on Adams's first trip there, and Steichen was so impressed he began to promote Adams to the publishers he knew. Later, Adams sent a copy of one of his picture books to Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ickes was trying to build up the National Parks, and showed the book to Roosevelt. Not surprisingly, Roosevelt approved of the idea of hiring Adams to go around to all the parks and take pictures to be displayed in the Capitol Rotunda. You can't get much better a display venue than that, and Adams was already a major photography star long before he shot "Moonrise, Hernandez" in 1948.
