I want a career as working in a hobby shop and building RC gas cars do i take mechanical engineering in college?

I don't think you'd even need college for that... just a very good working knowledge of the hobby. Experience and knowing everything about the hobby would be most important there. Winning a trophy or two in RC racing wouldn't hurt. If you want a career designing RC car parts for the companies that make them... then take mechanical engineering.

Doubt if the hobby shop job would pay much... unless it was your shop. Maybe make some money doing mechanical engineering and save to open your own hobby shop ;)

If all you are doing is putting together cars designed by someone else there is no engineering involved there. If you applied engineering principles to make a better car that would need some engineering background. No matter how good you become at that task you are not exercising creativity based on advanced technical skills.
